Sci-Fi Imagination and Artistic Expression
The rapid development of science and technology at the extreme of global rationalization is taking on a paradoxical “magical” quality. In a world transformed into a space of consumption birthed as a consequence of thorough rationalization, the operation principles of algorithms, artificial intelligence, and network technologies have become invisible. These are being experienced by people as a magical power that already exceeds the understanding of its users. The magical quality of technology holds a double meaning: while it risks being linked with social inequality, the alienation of humanity, environmental destruction, and the allure of capitalism, it simultaneously holds the potential to shake up our rationalized world and evoke us to imagine alternative realities and futures.?
This project focuses on sci-fi imagination by critically and creatively engaging with such circumstances as an artistic practice. There are already numerous practices in past science fiction and artistic expressions of works that have foretold the ruin of the real world and sought to create new narratives. In this project we will reinterpret these works, and discussions will be held regarding the relevant themes. By utilizing sci-fi imagination as a mediator, we aim to critically disassemble the magical reality created by technology, and to concretely conceptualize and present the narratives of an alternative future.

This project, which bridges science and technology with artistic expression, will progress around three pillars spanning its duration through discussions regarding theoretical questions, fieldwork, and creative practice. Whilst referencing a variety of artworks as necessary, we will think about “sci-fi imagination and artistic expressions” through numerous themes. However, students will be required to connect the critique, analysis, and interpretation conducted in this project to their own creative practice, using “sci-fi imagination” to question again the real world. More specifically, the following activities are what is planned.?
- While drawing on exceptional science fiction works, we will think about “sci-fi imagination and artistic expressions” and bring up various themes each time.?
- Through fieldwork in urban spaces, we will explore the ambivalent nature of technology’s magical qualities.?
- At the end of the year, participants will produce their own works and present them in a project exhibition.
